Fiendish Freddy's Big Top o' Fun (Commodore Amiga, Mindscape, 1989)

Interesting concept, but the needed precition and dificulty makes this one hard to enjoy. The swan dive is pretty easy, but the juggling is abysmal because it takes you forever to find out how the controls work, and that's before having to count in having to throw a target in a position where you can then catch two falling at the same time, plus dealing with throwing the babies into the carriage to get extra points, plus having to throw the bomb away the instant you catch it as throwing it up and juggling it will make it kill you on impact etc.

You can have fun in this game, for example once I got the hang of the trapeeze I breezed through it quickly, and enjoyed it. But the fact of the matter is the game recquires you to perfectly hit things at the exact time, but gives you no usefull visual aids to help you acomplish this.

For example, the knife throwing stage, you have no idea what part of your "target knife"'s sprite actually indicates where the knife will hit, nor does anything about it change when it's positioned correctly over a balloon. Then there's the problem of needing to estimate the exact time it takes the balloos to get from point A where you need to fire to point B where the knife should hit, as they are unevenly placed and so this varies.

The tightrope is actually managable, being comparable to a similar event in "Incredible crisis". But the cannonball event is the worst, having two selectable variables, plus the amount of gunpowder to worry about. And even if you do fairly well on all events and so so on the juggling, you'll still get the bad ending, and miss getting the good one by about 800 dollars.

Seriously, some numeral visualisation to go along with your adjustments would make this far less frustrating.

Kato-Chan & Ken Chan (PC Engine/Turbo Grafx 16) 1987

Being a very early PC Engine title, it seems almost unfair of me to compare it to later titles, after all it was one of only two platform games released in the PC Engine launch year, with only "Wonderboy in Monster Land" to compare it to.

It was also one of the first PC Engine/Turbo Grafx games I've played. And it's currently the last I completed. The reason for that is both the games' length and cryptic nature.

The game itself is basicly a very simple "run right until you get to the exit" sort of thing, with a distinct "New Adventure Island" feeling, coming from having to collect quickly dissapearing fruit to replenish your ever decreasing life bar. But as one soon finds out, finding various secret trigers is esential to completing the game. In order to get the key to the boss room, you have to hit most everything in every third field of a world, otherwise you're pretty much screwed. However, you also have to hit numerous items in varying ways to make necessary platforms appear, and sometimes you're basicly forced to just blindly kick at the air until you hit something.

Toilet humour is about the only thing that even gives this game any distinct flavour, but it was done better elsewhere, resulting in "Toilet Kids" ,which is nothing but toilet humour in every single aspect.

Then there's the level warps. Oh the level warps. Some springs actualy bounce you all the way out of the level you're on, but only a select few make you warp forwards, and even then alot of the times, it's useless (like a warp to the next level in a key level long before you have a chance to get the key) or counter productive (a warp to the next level right in front of the level exit- which actually isn't very beneficial because your depleted health bar won't get refilled). And then there are many many many warps sending you back. Sometimes these can be usefull if you're in the boss world and forgot to pick up the key. Other times, these can send you back needlessly far, one such warp in level 6 apparently sends you back all the way to level 1 !

Finaly, the game can be very dickish sometimes. Towards the end, there's a large gap that you can't seemingly move across, making you jump up and hit the air like deranged, until you figure out....oh, there's a secret platform all the way below the bottom of the screen. It's the only time the game does this, so you're a basicly forced to waste time and resolve to commit suicide before you can move on.

The final level of the game. Can't you just feel the excitement leaping off the screen ?

But that's nothing compared to one area in world 6. You have to jump across a whole platform filled to the brim with instant death fire on every pixel, by jumping over a flock of enemy flies, one at a time. And if you happen to fall off, the flies never come back.

The main reason, however, that alot of people wouldn't finish the game is more the fact that the game is just really repetitive and long. There are 24 levels, but only about four or five different level themes, cycling through several each level, and these don't even look that different from one another to begin with. The enemies are also all pretty much the same from 1-1 to 6-4, with only the bosses looking different, but even these are pretty much the same hulkish sprite, with slightly changed graphics, attacking you in the exact same way, just the amount of hits they take is different.

The final boss. He actually looks more mookish then the world 5 boss, he at least had a goatee and wore green.  Oh and guess what ? He attacks by throwing boulders at you. Just like all the other bosses.

Only the final boss even gave be a bit of trouble, as I could just wheeze through all the other bosses without any kind of plan or strategy.

Overall, this game is really not that entertaining, and you will find yourself bored after the first couple of levels.

First of all I must give thanks to the awesome that is Hardcore Gaming 101, because of their wealth of articles on interesting subjects related to video gaming, that personaly allowed me to discover many things I would likely never have come across.

One of these is todays offering, by (in)famous Korean bootleging company Zemina. Known, if at all today, by their hack and paste "Super Boy" series (a hack of SMB's so pathetic that only in the last game do they actually change the main character sprite in any way), as well as ripping off a whole bunch of other well known video games at the time, from making an inferior clone under the brilliant alias of "Boggle Boggle", to just stealing the game altogether and simply hacking their own name and "copyright" into the game. Now, there are exactly 3 titles in Zemina's library I have had any interest in. The first is "The Three Dragon Story", which seems both very interesting and very challenging from what little I know of it. The second being Cyborg Z, a vertical shooter when you take charge of a, persumabely, huge mecha and blow stuff up. The third is Magic Kid GooGoo, Zemina's only known outing on the NES. However, the first one is nowhere to be found, while the third one is apparently legendary in it's obscurity. In fact, my first search for Cyborg Z was also met without results until I happened upon some good soul on the ol' internet who happened to have found and dumped the Master System version.

First of I was dissapointed in that the game refused to work on a Fusion, but, to my everlasting surprise, the file, clearly having the "sms" extension, works in an MSX emulator. It doesn't even recquire you to change the extension !

So I got to playing. The game, of course, scrolls in a rather arthritic sort of way, but this was a well known problem on the MSX 1, and the game is literally just a port of the MSX version for the Master System, both being apparently very similar, program-wise.

The first couple of levels go by well enough, but then you begin to notice that while the levels themselves change, the scenery is mostly uninteresting, with the same enemies repeated throughout the first 5 stages. Even the bosses, while being different in appearance and attacks, generally recquire a similar strategy of going left and right , dodging bullets and spamming one of the special weapons into the bosses face. Also, all of them are prohibited from actually going near you physicly, due to some laser barrier, which means the boss will always stay at the top third of the screen.

I always find myself adoring late 80's and early 90's video games for including things like old, then contemporary computers, and multi-colored floppy disks as colectibles, I'm not sure why

 Also, every level is rather long, with a lengthy trek, a mid boss, another lengthy trek and then the final boss, always fought in the same,plain black room. But the enemies and environments are so same-same that it just makes you wish the level was over already and you could fight the boss. And your main objective in every level is virtualy the same. Go around, shoot at enemies and primarily at turrets which may or may not contain power ups and which are littered throughout a good 70 % of the levels, while trying to save up as much of your special weapon ammunition as possible.

Only level 6 picks up a tad by inserting a couple of new enemies, but it's level 7 that's my favourite. Not only because of even more new enemies, but because they all fit into the scheme of the level, which looks like you're flying through some giant computer. Level 8 is a bit more plain and quite frankly a bit frustrating due to the amount of bullets thrown at you. And the final boss looks more goofy then anything, more like a huge action figure then anything to be afraid of.

However, it's all worth just to see the spectacular ending

Overall, the game is a little too long to really even be interesting and unless you spam the hell out of the bonus wheels while a) having the target skills of a professional sniper or b) cheating, you probably won't prevail until the end of the game.
